New Jersey Car Title Transfer Process

NJ Title Transfer - How to Transfer a Car Title in NJ

When you're selling a car in NJ you must sign the title on the back first to transfer ownership to the buyer.

Where Do I Sign a New Jersey Title?

Sign on the back of the title in the lower left section where it is marked "Seller’s Signature.”

Print your name above that line where it reads “Seller’s Name (Hand Print).”

Can I Sell a Car in New Jersey Without a Title?

New Jersey requires a title to sell a vehicle. If your title is lost, a duplicate title can be obtained from the MVC.

NJ Title Fees & DMV Fees

When you sell your car with CarBrain we cover most NJ title fees. So even though the standard fees are $60 transfer fee for a title with no lien, and $85 for a title with a lien, you don't have to worry about that! The NJ transfer tax only applies to the car buyer, so you also won't have to worry about those extra costs. We try to make the NJ car title transfer process as pain-free as possible, and reduce the written mistakes on car titles.
