Common Toyota Tacoma Problems You Might Encounter

The Toyota Tacoma was introduced in 1995, and has become one of the highest-selling vehicles in the United States. Problems started showing up in the second- and third-generation iterations of the vehicle, when they redesigned the vehicle design.

The sections below go over common Toyota Tacoma problems you might encounter with certain model years. Consider whether selling your vehicle to CarBrain is the right choice.

2007 Toyota Tacoma Problems

The 2007 Toyota Tacoma has a few major issues that are both dangerous and pricey to repair. The first is frame rust. 2007 Tacomas are prone to early rusting in the frame, leading to large holes and structural integrity.

Unfortunately, drivers are typically left to pay for the cost of repairs independently. Depending on the severity of the rust and corrosion, it could cost thousands of dollars to fix the vehicle body and repair the damage. In some cases, there may be no way to repair the damage.

Additionally, the corrosion problems also affect the vehicle’s suspension. A recall was issued for certain 2005-2011 Tacomas related to the rear leaf spring, which could be damaged by corrosion. Unfortunately, not all vehicles were included in the recall. Drivers may be on the hook for the replacement, which can cost $400 to $800.

Finally, numerous drivers have reported a problem with the vehicle speed control. Multiple drivers have reported the vehicle accelerating without warning, leading to a major risk of a crash. At least 33 crashes and two deaths have been reported related to this problem thus far. A recall was issued for 2004-2010 models to repair this issue.

2009 Toyota Tacoma Common Problems

The 2009 Toyota Tacoma’s common problems are a repeat of the 2007 difficulties. This model of the Tacoma was included in both the rear leaf spring and acceleration recalls that affected the 2007 model.

However, it also has problems with the transmission. Drivers report that the vehicle slips in low gears, sometimes failing to accelerate. This can happen with new and old vehicles alike. Transmission repair jobs can cost thousands of dollars if a mechanic is able to diagnose the problem at all, which many drivers say they can’t.

A less-serious but still inconvenient problem involves the vehicle’s radio. Drivers report that the radio will turn itself off without warning, oftentimes repeatedly. In many cases, the only fix is a replacement radio. In some cases, even replacement radios end up developing the problem.

Finally, many drivers have complained that the headlights tend to crack due to overheating. Replacing the lights can cost just under $500.

2016 Toyota Tacoma Problems

The 2016 Tacoma was the first iteration of the third generation. Drivers reported engine and transmission problems showing up off the bat.

Some drivers report that there is a transmission delay when trying to put the vehicle in drive in the cold. At least one Tacoma owner was able to repair the problem by updating some programming in the vehicle, but many others have reported being unable to find a fix.

However, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma’s transmission problems don’t end there. Drivers complain that the vehicle has trouble sliding between gears even at faster speeds or warmer temperatures, with no apparent permanent solution. A complete transmission replacement can cost thousands of dollars.

One common complaint with the engine was that it would stall or misfire frequently without apparent cause. In June 2017, Toyota issued a recall for 2016 and 2017 Tacomas to repair a faulty crank position sensor that was causing some Tacomas to stall.

However, the recall was limited to about 30,000 vehicles. If your vehicle was not included in the recall and has developed stalling issues, you may be on the hook for about $200.

Is the cost of repairing your vehicle adding up? Consider selling to CarBrain. We buy all less-than-perfect vehicles, no matter what shape they’re in. You could have a check in your hands in under 48 business hours.

2017 Toyota Tacoma Problems

2017 Tacomas were included in the engine stalling recall that affected 2016 engines. If your 2017 Toyota Tacoma is stalling but wasn’t included in the recall, you may need to take it to a mechanic to perform the faulty crank position sensor yourself.

However, there are other 2017 Toyota Tacoma problems that have been reported. Numerous complaints have rolled in about the vehicle’s transmission failing to shift properly between gears. Replacing the transmission could run drivers $4,000 or more.

Transmission failure can kick in at under 30,000 miles. In some cases, problems may be covered by the car’s drivetrain warranty. However, in others drivers may be on the hook for the entire cost of repair and replacement for whatever transmission troubles ail their vehicles.

2019 Toyota Tacoma Problems

Although the Toyota Tacoma is a brand new vehicle, it has already accumulated numerous complaints about its drivetrain and electrical system.

Additionally, 2018-2019 Tacomas were included in a Toyota recall related to faulty fuel pumps. A fuel pump failure found in more than 1.2 million vehicles including the 2018-19 Tacomas could cause engines to stall, leaving drivers at risk on the road. Luckily, a recall means the problem is covered for free. Unfortunately, it indicates larger problems with the drivetrain.

Drivers report that the 2019 Tacoma vibrates when slowing down, although drivers have failed to identify an apparent cause. The problem may be with the transmission, as in previous iterations of the vehicle.

Another minor complaint that has come up repeatedly relates to the vehicle’s Bluetooth system. Drivers have complained that their phones may disconnect without warning, sometimes in the middle of phone calls.
